# Managing active SyntheticFi loans

Two light touchpoints a year. SyntheticFi handles the rest.

{% hint style="info" %}

## Your only jobs are a yearly review and a tax heads-up

Once a loan is open, you review it with the client so the structure still fits, and give them a heads-up before tax season. SyntheticFi handles the trading, monitoring, and reporting in between.
{% endhint %}

SyntheticFi loans run themselves once they're open. Your job is to keep the structure aligned with the client's goals and keep them informed. That's two touchpoints.

### The two touchpoints

1. **Loan review.** Once a year, or as the client's needs change, check in on the loan: is the balance still right, is floating versus fixed still the right call, what are the rollover options at expiration, has anything in the portfolio changed. It's a 15-minute conversation, usually folded into your regular client review.
2. **Tax-season heads-up.** Before tax season, send a short note reminding the client that the loan generates a capital loss on their consolidated 1099. Most CPAs handle it without issue, but a heads-up prevents surprised calls. For the details, see [More on tax deductibility →](/product-deep-dive/more-on-tax-deductibility-examples-and-filing.md)

SyntheticFi handles everything else automatically: rolling positions, monitoring margin, executing trades, and reporting.

### Reading the loan in Schwab

SyntheticFi loans show up differently from a traditional loan in the Schwab view. If you want a walkthrough:

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://advisorhub.syntheticfi.com/serving-existing-clients-learn-more/managing-active-syntheticfi-loans.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
